Overview

Through its Constitution and other legislation, South Africa aims to deepen democracy and enhance developmental governance through local government. The country's citizens are central to this process and local municipalities, such as Bitou, rely on ward committees to form a vital link between local government and communities. Through communicating with the citizens of the municipality, ward committees help ensure greater community participation.

The municipal area governed by the Bitou Local Municipality is divided into six wards, which are made up of a number of suburbs. Each ward is represented by a ward councillor. The Bitou Council has a total of 11 councillors, of which six are elected as ward councillors and five are nominated in terms of proportional representation.
