The handover ceremony was attended by Bitou’s executive mayor Lulama Mvimbi, deputy mayor Monica Seyisi, the municipal manager Mr L Ngoqo, and other officials including Councillor Sishuba and the housing committee chairperson Lulamile Klaas.

Gogo Maria thanked the municipality and housing committee for such a great Christmas gift. Life had not been easy for Seysi, who had moved around a lot from shack to shack or other people’s RDP houses, sometimes paying R500 in rent. Now she had peace of mind, she told the mayor and visitors.
Mvimbi pointed out that the process of handing over houses was transparent, with emphasis placed on the old and young. He asked the new homeowners to take care of their houses, and not to sell or rent them out. Mvimbi added that they should not extend the house by adding a shack in the backyard.
He urged people to pay for services such as water.
Those earning less than R3 000 should register with the municipality, stating they could not afford to pay for services.
More houses will be handed over to residents in 15 weeks time.
